PTO Meeting
Bangert Elementary School
The meeting was called to order at 9:20 a.m. by Michelle Flye.
Present: Shannon LuQuire, Karen
Greene, Tonya Mills, Lisa Morse, Mary Kathryn Harris, Liz Kidder, Leigh Healy,
Lisa Skarsten, Sandy Iams, Charity Kirby, Michele Varma, Christin Grady, Jody
Cheek, Katie Taylor, Erin Hartman, Christy Gorman, Erica McFadyen, Michelle Flye
and Michelle Lee.
Election of Officers: Michelle
announced that due to an oversight on her part last year, election of officers
had not yet been held. Because of this, she called for nominations from the
floor for officers and an election was held. All positions were voted on and
passed unanimously. New officers for 2011-12
are:
President: Katie Taylor
Vice Pres: Charity Kirby
Secretary: Michelle Flye
Treasurer: Erin Hartman
At this point, Katie assumed control of the meeting and Michelle took over secretarial duties from Erica McFadyen.
Treasurer’s Report: Erin reviewed the enclosed handout. She also said that due to teachers leaving and
being replaced, some confusion about the spending of the Dancing Like the Stars money had been encountered. Originally it was decided that all teachers would divide the money equally, giving each teacher $250 to spend. It was decided that
Erin and Mrs. Lee would meet to decide how to handle this.
Principal’s Report: Mrs. Michelle Lee, the new principal, was introduced to the board. Mrs. Lee expressed
the desire that PTO not become all about raising money. She wants every request from the teachers for money from the PTO to go through her first. She also said that this year, $12,000 had been cut from her budget, leaving her with $10,000
to order needed supplies for the year. Mrs. Lee said she could use Title I money to pay for programs like Brain Pop and Study Island, but that this money could not be used for instructional supplies. She asked that the PTO give her money
for supplies. Erin reported that there was up to $4,000 left in the budget that could be given to Mrs. Lee for this purpose. The board voted unanimously to give Mrs. Lee this money. Mrs. Lee also announced that Open House for grades 1-5
would be held September 20 from 5:30 to 6:15 and would include a hot dog dinner. The entire family would be welcome to attend. Kindergarten will hold a separate information night. Mrs. Lee also said she would like the PTO to move some of its
meetings to the evening. The school will hold three evening programs throughout the year, and the PTO will be provided with an opportunity to address the assembled parents at that time. Fourth and Fifth grades will do the Fall Program, Second and Third the Winter Program and Kindergarten and First the Spring Program.
Hospitality Committee: Tonya Mills, co-chair of the Hospitality Committee, gave a report. Room moms will be
selected after Open House. Tonya said she and Radonna Carroll, the other co-chair of the Hospitality Committee, have discussed the need to streamline the room moms. It was decided that Tonya, Radonna and Mrs. Lee would meet to discuss this.
Fundraising Committee: Katie, chair of the Fundraising Committee, gave a report for this committee. Katie has
identified several sub-committees and has assigned someone to be in charge of these committees. She would like a parent and teacher to co-chair each sub-committee.
Katie asked Lisa Morse
for a report on Cherrydale sales. Lisa said she and Mrs. Lee decided that in
light of recent weather events (Hurricane Irene) it was decided it would be best
to put off the Cherrydale kickoff for a week or two. Three possible dates were
given as new kickoff dates: September 23, 28 or 30. The board voted unanimously
to move the kickoff date to September 23. Lisa said she would need help with
collecting and distributing and also asked for $10 gift cards to be donated for
the “cash vault” which will be used instead of cash prizes. These cards can be
dropped off at the office for Lisa to pick
up.
Katie announced Skate
Night will be held January 19 from 6:15 to 8:15
p.m.
Mary Kathryn Harris
announced Power Hour x2 will be held November 18 after
school.
Katie will ask the
following people to take care of the following committees: Jennifer East, Little
Caesar’s; Erin Hartman, Movie Night; Jody Cheek, New Bern Gymnastics, but it was
also discussed that this did not raise much money last year and a possible
Strike Zone fundraiser was considered
instead.
Erica McFadyen, Box
Tops Chair, announced that there will be a monthly collection of Box Tops, with
a prize for the class that collects the most. Erica will ask Lisa Kafer to help
with the September collection. Erica also mentioned that Box Tops for Education
offers several additional fundraising opportunities, including a Hanes brand
t-shirt promo which will earn extra box
tops.
Pouch Brigade: Laura Smith is in charge of this sub-committee and she needs help collecting and
readying the pouches to be mailed off.
Katie announced Fall
Festival was tentatively scheduled for October 28 and she wanted to use a
Halloween theme. Lisa Morse offered to do the hayride again. A sign up sheet was
passed for the planning committee. Katie will be in touch with these people to
schedule a meeting.
Bingo Night is
scheduled for February 23.
Charity Kirby mentioned
that several other fundraising opportunities are available for the school,
including collection of tops from Coca Cola bottles, Campbell’s labels and the
Harris Teeter VIC card. Charity will work with Mrs. Lee to obtain some
collection boxes in the front of the school, and also to inform parents of these
opportunities.
Science Fair:
Mrs. Sandy Iams addressed the PTO board about the possibility of a science fair
in the spring. It was decided that this could be combined with the Earth Day
Celebration in April and science experiments could have an Earth Day
theme.
